RCY Current Affairs Competition 2008

Do you know the exact date in which the frightful tsunami hit Sri Lanka? How about the different countries that Red Cross Youth lent our helping hand to? Well, the cadets that participated in this year’s Red Cross Youth (RCY) annual Current Affairs Competition (CAC) sure did!

The objective of the Current Affairs Competition is:

  • To encourage cadets to apply the values of the Red Cross in their everyday lives
  • To provide opportunities for cadets to read up on current world affairs pertaining to the Red Cross Societies, and to create an awareness of these happenings and events through their participation in the competition

Armed with their props and PowerPoint Presentation, a total of 121 participants from 29 schools strutted into the competition venue at Ang Mo Kio Secondary on 19 July, ready to awe the audience.

Similar to CAC 2007, Round 1 had our judges moving around the hall as they view and critiqued the exhibits set up by each school. Everyone was impressed by the standard of the participants’ knowledge in Current Affairs, so it was no wonder that our judges had such a tough time deciding the Top 8 Schools.

Round 2 however added a different touch to the competition; the Top 8 Schools were rounded up at the front of the hall as questions were flashed for mere seconds but just enough for our participants to scribble down their answers before presenting them to the judges.

After a tough ‘battle’, the verdict was cast and Victoria School emerged as the National Champion! CAC’08 was certainly a gratifying event and the participants not only walk out with the Red Cross Value Gold proficiency badge, but also the valuable reward of knowledge.
