S'pore Red Cross and Macau Red Cross Contribute Fishing Vessels
To Restore Livelihood For Victims of the Tsunami Disaster

Joining the Singapore Red Cross in restoring economic livelihood to victims of the 2004 Tsunami Disaster, Macau Red Cross has purchased three (3) fishing vessels to be donated to Yayasan Indonesia Cerdes.

Costing a total of S$190,000, the fishing vessels were handover officially to Yayasan Indonesia Cerdes on Sunday, 20 August 2006, 9.30am at the Senoko Fishing Port.

The fishing vessels which measure approximately 19.6m x 5m x 2m were donated to Yayasan Indonesia Cerdes, a non-profit organisation in Meulaboh, which will help to coordinate the use of the fishing vessels amongst the fishermen in Meulaboh for their livelihood.

In addition to receiving the donated fishing vessels, the fishermen will also be receiving training programmes to orientate them in the effective use of the fishing vessels. The training programme which cost about S$40,000 is part of the Singapore Red Cross' capacity building plans to help restore some economic livelihood to the fishermen affected during the tsunami disaster. The 5-days training programme will be held in Singapore, starting 28 August. About 21 fishermen will be attending the training programme.
