The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) has made headway with communications to the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS). As of this afternoon, the SRC managed to speak with the Chairman of Myanmar Red Cross Society and they have welcomed SRC’s offer of assistance towards their relief operations.
SRC assistance to MRCS
According to the MRCS, the need is still great with urgent requests for shelters, water, food packs, blankets and telecommunications. Although some parts of Yangon have improved its communications network, other areas are still facing the challenge. Hence, MRCS has requested for SRC’s assistance to provide satellite phones for their emergency relief operations.
- Concurrently, SRC have also managed to purchase 1,000 family tents, 15,000 family ration packs, 10 water purification units. These will be sent to Myanmar as soon as MRCS is ready to receive them. DHL, PIL, Silkair and Jetstar Asia have kindly agreed to help send with the transportation of both the SRC medical team and our relief items.
- An advance cum liaison party of two persons have also been mobilised and is on standby for deployment pending visa approval from Myanmar. They will help to pave the advancement of a medical team who are already on standby for mobilisation, pending visa approval from Myanmar. The 9-men medical team will provide basic medical healthcare assistance to the survivors of the disaster in Yangon and other parts of Myanmar.
Donations to the “Red Cross Myanmar Cyclone Nargis”
To date, the SRC have received a total of S$216,926 in cash and cheque donations from individuals and corporate organisations.
The SRC have also received a pledge of S$50,000 from the Temasek Foundation. They will also be working with the SRC and other organisations in future reconstruction efforts during the rehabilitation stages of the disasters. The Singapore Business Federation will also be doing their bit by encouraging their 15,000 business members to contribute towards the fund. The SRC welcomes these pledges and hopes that other organisations will also come forward to support the SRC fund raising efforts.
With effect from today, donors may also donate via DBS’ network of ATM services and it’s I-Banking.
Due to logistical considerations, SRC requests that no donation-in-kind be made.
Please see attached for the various channels for donations.
