Red Cross Home for the Disabled (RCHD)

The Red Cross Home for the Disabled (Home), situated at Family Link @ Lengkok Bahru currently provides long-term residential services and short-term respite care to *eighty-four severely disabled residents between the age of 8 to 61 years of age.

The residents of the Home suffer from various disabilities which include Down Syndrome, cerebral palsy, spastic quadriplegia, muscular dystrophy, epilepsy and other severe physical disabilities. This is the only residential Home in Singapore that provides residential care to the severely disabled in Singapore.

The residential care is highly subsidised, and the services are targeted at:

  • residential care for severely intellectually and physically disabled persons whose family members are no longer able to continue with their care;
  • short-term respite care to relieve care-givers' stress for their disabled relatives.

Activities

In addition to taking care of the daily needs of the residents, volunteers and full-time staff also organise activities that benefit the residents on a regular basis. Such activities include:

  • Physiotherapy. Qualified volunteer therapists provide weekly physiotherapy sessions for the residents. The therapy aides also carry out physiotherapy exercises for the residents.
  • Occupational Therapy.
  • Befriending & Outings. Residents are befriended by volunteers who also organise social and recreational activities, and from time to time, assist in the general care of residents, e.g. feeding them during mealtimes, cutting their hair and others.
  • Art & Craft. Some of our residents are talented artists in their own right, producing wonderful works of art. These art pieces have been used regularly as corporate cards and gifts for both corporate and individual donors and volunteers, and presented to the various Guests-of-Honour at functions.

How You Can Help

You can make a difference by volunteering and sharing your expertise, time, and resources in the caring for our residents. Volunteers are needed in befriending our residents, organising art activities and outings. In addition, doctors, nurses and physiotherapists are required to provide nursing care and physiotherapy and occupational therapy to the residents.
