Rubber boots and torchlights to aid in Myanmar Red Cross’ relief operations

The Singapore Red Cross (SRC) will be sending another batch of relief items to Myanmar in aid of the Myanmar Red Cross Society’s (MRCS) relief operations.  As reported by our liaison team in Yangon, the items which include 1,000 rubber boots and 1,000 torchlights, were requested by MRCS for use by its volunteers and disaster relief members in their relief operations in the delta area.

 

The six-men SRC medical relief team will join another two medical relief personnels who are already in Myanmar.  The advance party, Mr Amran Bin Amir and Mr Elisha Teo, a nurse and a first-aider, left yesterday with the medical team from the Ministry of Health (MOH) on the SAF C130. 

SRC’s relief assistance to Myanmar 

  • 8 May: Pledged S$300,000 to purchase emergency relief items through the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies. 
  • 13 May: SRC sent three members as liaison officers to Myanmar. They were the only Singapore NGO representatives in Myanmar.  Their role was to work with Myanmar Red Cross Society on their needs, receive relief items and facilitate the deployment of SRC’s 8-member medical team.
  • 16 May: Sent S$700,000 worth of emergency relief items to Myanmar. Three liaison officers from the SRC received the relief items at the Yangon airport and handed over to MRCS for survivors of the Myanmar disaster.  The items comprise of 1,000 family tents, 35,000 family ready-to-eat food packs, over a million water purification tablets, 10 units of hand-powered water purification systems and 1,000 torchlights with spare batteries to MRCS for their relief operations.  Another batch of rubber boots and raincoats will also be sent to Myanmar
  • 21 May: Mr Christopher Chua, Secretary General of the SRC arrived in Myanmar to discuss the deployment of the medical team with the Myanmar’s Minister of Foreign Affairs.
  • 22 May: Two medical personnels, Mr Amran Bin Amir, a nurse and Mr Elisha Teo, a first-aider arrived in Myanmar as advanced party to recee the hospital that the medical team will be operating in.

Donations to the “Red Cross Myanmar Cyclone Disaster”
To date, the SRC has received $3 million through cash and cheque donations.  The money received will be used exclusively for the Myanmar Cyclone Disaster. Due to logistical considerations, SRC requests that no donation-in-kind be made.

1) Walk-in cash/cheque donations

  • Collection hours are:

Monday to Friday: 9.30am to 5.45 pm

7) UOB – Donation Tins (from 22 May)

  • UOB will have Singapore Red Cross donation tins placed at all UOB Branches. All contributions by cheque should be crossed and made payable to “Red Cross - Myanmar Relief Fund”
