1,000 family tentages, 35,000 family ready-to-eat food packs, over a million water purification tablets and 10 units of hand-powered water purification systems will be sent to Myanmar for survivors of Myanmar’s Cyclone Nargis.
This action follows a meeting between Singapore Red Cross’ liaison officers and the Myanmar Red Cross Society (MRCS) where MRCS welcomed SRC’s assistance. The three liaison officers arrived in Myanmar last evening.
The emergency relief items will be handed over personally by SRC’s liaison officers to the MRCS, who will then distribute it to survivors of the disasters.
Additionally, the SRC liaison team also had the opportunity to meet with the President of the Myanmar Red Cross Society regarding the deployment of a 9-man SRC medical relief team. The team will provide basic medical healthcare assistance to survivors. MRCS welcomed SRC’s offer of assistance and said that the application is being processed by the Minister of Health and will revert to us within 48 hours.
Ground Situation
- Since 3 May, MRCS together with the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has been carrying out assessments and providing the immediate relief assistance to survivors of the disaster.

- Main needs are safe drinking water, emergency shelters, hygiene items and food.
- There remains a serious threat of health problems and communicable diseases.
Donations to the Red Cross Myanmar Cyclone Disaster Appeal
To date, the SRC has received a total of S$1,136,000 through cash and cheque donations. The money received will be used exclusively for the Myanmar Cyclone Disaster. As the needs are still great, the SRC will continue to raise funds until its permit for the public appeal expires on 16 June.
Due to logistical considerations, SRC requests that no donation-in-kind be made.
Please see attached for the various channels for donations.
